Learning Mentor

Year 6 pupils taking part in this year's citizenship programme paid a visit to Victoria Court in Saltaire. They were made to feel very welcome, and spent a long time talking to the residents.

They had a follow-up visit closer to Christmas to say thank you to the residents for making them feel so welcome.

Mrs Hoyle, our part- time Learning Mentor works in conjunction with teachers to identify children who are not reaching their full potential. This could be due to a number of factors e.g. a family problem, self esteem, attendance, behaviour and other issues that affect a child’s learning. Children are referred by the class teacher to work with the mentor. Both the child and the mentor will then set targets for the child to achieve. Parents are informed of the referral and are encouraged to work with the mentor in providing a successful outcome. Parents can also refer their child to the mentor if they feel their child needs extra support at school.

 =====

Mrs Hoyle also undertakes small group work mainly working on social skills and may be involved in other projects to enhance our children’s learning.

 =====

Other duties our mentor undertakes within school are:

  •  taking responsibility for the ‘Help Me’ Pupil Box where children are able to write down their problem and have someone to talk to in confidence
  • training playground helpers in the roles of Equipment Monitors, Play Leaders and Problem Busters
  • facilitating the School Council where a strong emphasis is placed on pupils making decisions and having a say on matters regarding school
  •  running lunchtime and after school clubs such as Games Club and Nature Club, The Citizenship Course, Gardening Club and The K’Nex Club.

Children in Y6 have the opportunity to take part in a 10 week Citizenship course, where they work with children from Frizinghall Primary and the police to develop a range of good citizen skills. The course concludes with a 2 day residential as shown above.

Y5 had the opportunity to take part in a Forest Schools project.
