The Governing Body

The Governing Body has a statutory responsibility for the strategic management and development of the school.  It is the Governing Body’s statutory duty to promote high standards of educational attainment and ensure effective management of the school’s resources.

We are responsible for ensuring that all relevant policies and procedures are in place and that appropriate targets are set.  We monitor and review the school budget and appoint staff, including the head teacher.

We are not responsible for the day to day management and operation of the school.  This is the responsibility of Head Teacher, Mrs A Smith and her Senior Leadership Team, with whom we work closely to fulfil our statutory obligations.

Finance Committee

The Finance Committee meets at least once per term to discuss financial governance matters and every month to review the financial performance of the school. 

The primary purpose of the committee is to oversee the Financial Management of the school, ensuring that school funds are used appropriately and that the right financial decisions are being made.

Standards and Teaching Committee

The Curriculum Committee meets at least once per term to discuss curriculum matters and every month to review the financial performance of the school. 

Shipley C of E Primary Curriculum Committee takes its role in monitoring and scrutinising standards seriously. We are responsible for monitoring the way the school curriculum is implemented.  The school curriculum is underpinned by the values that are important in our school. The curriculum is the means by which the school achieves its objective of educating pupils in the knowledge, skills and understanding that they need in order to lead fulfilling lives.

As well as supporting the school in its implementation of the curriculum, pupil progress and SAT results are analysed to help identify focus areas. The Curriculum committee review the data provided and help to identify, monitor, and review improvement and development targets.

Scrutiny Sub - Committee

The Governing Scrutiny Committee is a new committee created following the recent Ofsted report . It meets every term to review the performance of the school in  much greater depth.

Members of this committee include Governors from the Standards and Teaching Committee (plus, all Governors will attend this committee at least once).

The primary purpose of the committee is to oversee, support and scrutinise in more depth the performance of the school and its outcomes, ensuring that school makes timely and specific decisions in line with the recent Ofsted results.

Key responsibilities comprise:

  • Book scrutinizes, where a selection of books are thoroughly reviewed along with staff to ensure improvements are being made.


Safeguarding Committee

The Safeguarding Committee and all Governors have a duty to ensure that the school meets its statutory responsibilities and ensure that the children and young people attending the school are safe.

The statutory guidance, ‘Keeping Children Safe in Education’, places statutory requirements on all governing bodies. The Safeguarding Committee makes sure their school has policies and procedures in place and take into account any statutory guidance issued by the Secretary of State, any local authority guidance and locally agreed inter-agency procedures.

The Safeguarding Committee ensure that they understand the follow up processes for absence and will be challenging/supporting the school in reducing absence rates.


Pay Committee

The Pay Committee meets annually to discuss Head Teacher performance and agrees targets as well as meeting to discuss teacher performance.
