Design Technology

It is our intent for DT to offer children the chance to use creative thinking and design within a defined purpose and tangible outcome. Through a variety of creative and practical activities, pupils are taught the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to engage in a process of designing and making. They work in a range of contexts through our topic based approach which allows for cross curricular links to be made.

Through the study of DT pupils acquire a broad range of subject knowledge and draw on disciplines such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art. Pupils learn how to take risks, becoming resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens. Through the evaluation of past and present design and technology, they develop a critical understanding of its impact on daily life and the wider world. High-quality design and technology education makes an essential contribution to the creativity, culture, wealth and well-being of the nation.

DT Long Term Plan

Progression in DT Document

Design Technology

By the end of Y6 we want our pupils to:-

  • Be able to perform everyday tasks confidently; have the creative, technical and practical expertise to participate successfully in an ever increasingly technological world.
  • Have built a repertoire of knowledge and understanding to enable them to design and make high-quality products for a wide range of users.
  • Have the necessary skills and knowledge to evaluate and test their ideas and products, and the work of others.
  • Understand the importance of a healthy diet; know how to cook.

How can you help at home?

Ways you might help your child to get a head start in Design Technology;

  • Teach your child to prepare simple foods; e.g. sandwiches, baking, fruit, salads; knowledge about food and healthy eating is central to DT.
  • Scissor skills, stitching, measuring are all important DT skills and will help your child to make high-quality products.
  • Provide lots of experience of making models; for example, following instructions for building lego models, following recipes, making models from "junk" materials.
