Our Music Curriculum

 At Shipley CE Primary School, children gain a firm understanding of what music is through listening, singing, playing, evaluating, analysing, and composing, across a wide variety of historical periods, traditions, and genres. Our vision is to nurture creative thinking for lifelong learning, and we are committed to inspiring curiosity and appreciation about the many elements of music.  As a Christian school, our values are at the heart of everything we do. For example, we aim to build resilience through practical skills work and respect, as we demonstrate an understanding of the validity and importance of all types of music and its role in different people’s lives. Through our music curriculum, we promote pupil well-being as we positively work to build up the confidence of all children.  Music can impact the way that children feel, think and act; we want music to encourage the body and mind to work together, develop motor skills, allow self-expression, listening and cooperation skills.

The school uses Charanga on-line music programme to teach music. 


By the end of Y6 we want our pupils to:-

  • perform, listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions, including the works of the great composers and musicians
  • learn to sing and to use their voices, to create and compose music on their own and with others, have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument, use technology appropriately and have the opportunity to progress to the next level of musical excellence
  • understand and explore how music is created, produced and communicated, including through the inter-related dimensions: pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure and appropriate musical notations.

How can you help at home?

Ways you might help your child to get a head start in Music;

  • Listen to as much music of all types and time periods as you can;
  • Talk about music and find out about music with your child;
  • Encourage your child to make music - sing songs, clap and beat rhythms.
